Matthew is a retired soldier looking for peace and solitude after the horrors of war and past mistakes. Gabrielle is a warrior that is trying to stay alive after avenging the wrongs done to her so many years ago. They are from different worlds, and with different priorities, definitely not not a pair of characters that you would expect to meet and fall in love.
This is a wonderful story about loss, pain, growth, and trust. Ms. Mueller shows us the horrors of Gabrielle’s past through dialogue, creating a distance for the reader that makes it still painful to learn, but still readable. She brings us to care and fear for this young woman and what she has been forced to live through. Matthew is a rare breed of hero, a man that is sure in himself, and sure of the woman he loves, knowing that to try to curb her strength would kill her not only by putting her in danger from others, but by killing her from within.
The story opens as we learn about Gabrielle, “now.” Alone, in the Dakotas living on a ranch with two other women she helped leave a brothel. Hints of a man she left behind are all we know about, until, eventually we are introduced to him, and his story. We learn of their past - both together and apart, until we finally learn how they are going to move forward together.
I am not a reader of historicals as a rule, but this story amazed me and sucked me into the lives of the characters. Sometimes confusing, sometimes aggravating, but always entertaining and gripping. I shall read this one again.
