Cynyr is a Reaper bounty hunter on the trail of a group of Rogue Reapers. He has vowed to protect humans from all evil, though, and when he sees a man attempt to rape a woman, he gladly dispatches the would be rapist. (And the way he did, I have to say was one of my favorite parts of the story) Aingeal is a woman on her own. Sold into illegal slavery by her ex-husband and on the run from the brutal man that claims ownership, she has nowhere to go, and appeals to Cynyr for help.
This story is set in a future time, but one which Planet Earth has been thrown back into a living system similar to the 1800’s. We learn who and what Reapers are and why they are here on the planet to help us. It is first in the WesternWinds series, and does a good job of setting history up.
I enjoyed the way Cynyr grew and changed throughout the book, learning to accept true feelings and someone else in his life. I felt Aingeal was a bit static, not as fleshed out as Cynyr, but she was a good counter to him. Ms. Boyett-Compo’s style was slightly different in this book than others I have read, and I have to say I enjoyed that tremendously. I will be looking for the next one in the series as it continues Cynry’s and Aingeal’s story.
