Following the deaths of her mother and siblings, Ruth Urswick's planned coming-out has to be put on hold. While she cares for her ailing father, who is slowly going insane, she longs for her own life, but is not yet desperate enough to agree to a marriage that's beneath her. But Lord Urswick wants to keep his daughter with him forever, and when he sees how she's admired at a London Society gathering, his jealousy becomes dangerous.
Ruth flees for help to Oliver, Earl of Iveleigh, who hides her in the last place anybody would think to look – a Covent Garden brothel. There Ruth learns more about love and lust than she'd ever imagined possible, and slowly she wins Oliver's heart – but when the young couple wed, Lord Urswick is determined to come between them, no matter what it takes…
This is an enjoyable romance set in the Georgian era, with a wealth of historical detail showcasing Ms Martin's research skills. The locations in London and Yorkshire are lovingly described and realistic, and the characters are more than a match for them. Lynne Martin has the language and style of this type of historical romance down to a tee, with the added bonus of the love scenes in the brothel, which are risqué and a lot of fun. Ruth is a great character, as is Lord Urswick, her mad father, and the climactic scene that pits Oliver against Lord Urswick is taut and exciting. A well-written historical, I recommend it.
