In a future where vampires have overrun the Earth and humans are constantly in danger, the government has decreed that humans need to breed to fight the vampire menace, and so homosexuality is illegal. Daniel is Morningstar, a hunter whose skill at despatching vampires is legendary amongst both races. He's also gay and lonely, his relationships ending in tragedy. When he meets Scott, a vampire, they can't resist their immediate attraction – even though an affair between them can only be disastrous. While Daniel tries to reconcile his love for Scott with the demands of his job, Scott must protect Morningstar from the vengeance of the vampires – including his ex-lover Morgan, a powerful vampiress who wants Scott for herself.
While I enjoyed the premise of this book, I was a bit disappointed with its execution. The chapters are short and choppy, so it reads more like a RPG than a novella. I also disliked the info-dump prologue, and would have preferred that information to have been revealed in the course of the story. However, the romance between Daniel and Scott was intriguing and the love scenes were enjoyable. The action sequences are where this book is strongest, being fast-paced and well-described. The idea of a future where homosexuality is once again illegal worked very well and added a piquancy to the love story. This was good as far as it went, but it could have been better.
