American genealogist Emily Hertford has come to Britain to search for her roots. Her mother was English, and on her death she left Emily her house in the border country between England and Wales. Emily is researching the history of the Cross family when she encounters a man who's adamant he won't help her.
Derek Crosse is annoyed when Emily starts poking around in his family history. While some people have skeletons in their closet, Derek has a darker secret – he's been alive for six centuries. A former Knight Templar, he was cursed by Robert Ab'Owen, a Templar colleague and rival for the lands of Chroesa Allt. Robert murdered Derek's beloved wife, Jennet, and so the years have been long and lonely.
The curse can only be broken when a member of the Ab'Owen family once again claims the right to Chroesa Allt. As Emily and Derek grow more involved, the shadow of the villainous Robert appears and calls Emily to the mysterious tower that looms over Chroesa Allt. There, truths will be revealed and destinies will be decided – one way or another…
This was an enjoyable short read with plenty of mystery and romance. The love scenes are hot and sexy, and both Derek and Emily are likeable characters. Derek especially is smouldering and intriguing: a man who wears his history as heavily as this is my kind of guy! His attraction for Emily is well contrasted with her colleague Clayton's interest. Ms Carrol has some great attention to detail, including lines about British quirks and foodstuffs that made this half English, half Welsh reviewer grin. If you love tales of knights, don't miss 'To Stay Forever'.
