Jala is an Estrosko warrior. In the 23rd century, that is the only way a woman can determine her own fate. That is, if she can last til she is 30 years old undefeated in the gladiatorial ring. Women are rare in this century, and in order to keep the population going, “matchings” are forced upon a woman at her 18th birthday. She is given to a pair of men and forced to stay with them for at least 5 years, bearing children for them.
Cassion and Sion have been working and saving to be matched with a woman. They have been best friends for years, and both are leaders in their fields. They know the woman they get will be happy to be matched with them, as she will want for no material needs. It comes a surprise that their new found third doesn’t want to be with them, with any man in fact, and will fight tooth and nail for her independence.
At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like this novel, as I am not a big fan of “forced seductions.” However, I realized as the book went on that there wasn’t any, and after reading Ms. Wine, I am sure she could have made even that subject palatable for me. There was plenty of explanation as to why characters made the choices they did, and I enjoyed that, as I wasn’t left going, “What? Why?” I read this in one sitting, eager to find out how everyone would get their needs met, and still be true to their characters. I enjoyed this enough that I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. Wine’s writing.
Warning: There were ménage scenes: M/F/M
