Grace's father is prospecting for gold and has brought his family along with him. Grace is resentful at first – how will she find a husband out in the wilderness? – but then tragedy strikes as the family are attacked by Lakota Indians. Grace witnesses the murder of her mother, and is saved from death by a young brave, Little Elk, who claims her as his own and takes her to his home.
There, Grace encounters Green Eyes, the heroine of 'Prairie Peace' who gave up her 'civilised' lifestyle to be with her husband Lone Eagle, who is now the leader of the tribe. Grace fears that she will be forced to submit to barbarous acts, but Little Elk is a kind, gentle man who gives her time to get used to the ways of the Lakota. But she cannot forget the murder of her family, not even when the killer is ostracised by the tribe.
With the friendship of Green Eyes, Grace begins to adjust to her new life, and slowly, she begins to come to terms with the past. As she learns the way of the Lakota, she falls in love with Little Elk and they are married – but their happiness is short-lived, as Indians from all tribes are threatened by white soldiers and forced into reservations. When Grace is seized during an attack on the village and returned to her former life, she must make a decision for the sake of her unborn child – to stay amongst her own people, or to find a way of reuniting with Little Elk.
This is the engaging sequel to 'Prairie Peace', and although the two books stand alone, I do suggest you read 'Prairie Peace' as well. Ginger Simpson displays a real mastery in her knowledge of the Lakota Indians, and she weaves history and factual detail so tightly into her prose that the reader learns many fascinating insights, which is something I always look for in a historical novel. You'll empathise with Grace as she suffers the shock of grief and dislocation, and be moved by her growing acceptance of the tribe, her own role in the wider world, and in her love for Little Elk.
