For years, ever since they were children, Sean and Bronwyn have loved one another. But her parents disapprove of Sean, the butcher's son – he's not good enough for their daughter, and his father is a ne'er-do-well. Torn apart as teenagers, Bronwyn is sent to a remote convent in Ireland – but Sean swears he will find her again.
Sean is a shape-shifter born of a mortal woman and carrying an alien parasite that makes him able to turn into a wolf-like animal. With his real father to help him, he sets out to track down Bronwyn. Unbeknownst to him, she discovers that she's pregnant – and in her pain and loneliness she attracts Danyon Hart, a Nightwind shape-shifter from beyond the stars, who is determined to protect her, and not let her go…
This is surely one of Ms Boyett-Compo's most powerful books. A story of young love thwarted by hatred, two innocent lives manipulated by adults with their own agenda, this will tug at your emotions. Sean and Bronwyn are two immensely strong characters driven by their love for one another despite the obstacles placed in their path. A salutary tale of what hatred and suspicion can do to even the mildest and most well-meaning individual, this is an outstanding example of its genre. Be sure to get the second book in this two-part series, Blackwind: Viraiden & Bronwyn.
