Lady Alsnete has been given in marriage to a powerful wizard, Lord Tentagil, who promised magical protection to Alsnete's father in return for her hand. But Tentagil didn't even turn up for the wedding ceremony, and now Alsnete has arrived at his castle to see what manner of husband awaits her.
But for the duration of their wedding night, she doesn't see Tentagil at all. She feels him when he comes to claim her, and when she asks to see him, he refuses. There is a curse upon him, one that he hoped his marriage would break – but it appears not to have worked. When Tentagil's sister explains the nature of the curse, Alsnete deciphers the riddle – and sets her husband free at last.
With better editing, this would have made a good short story. A cross between 'Beauty and the Beast' and the classic tale of Cupid and Psyche, it had a great deal of promise. Personally I would have preferred this story to be much longer, as the characters, especially Tentagil and the background to the curse, could have stood much more 'screen time'.
