London, 1885, and Eliot, an American who's in England looking for a wife, is teasing a group of well-heeled gentlemen about British women. He takes the advice of one of the men, who claims he knows a whore who used to be a lady. Seeking her out, he finds Charity – or Cherry, as she's known – and rather than use her, he asks her questions, hoping to learn from her how best to court an Englishwoman of good breeding.
Charity is shocked by his approach and resents it, especially as she finds Eliot attractive. Under his gentle coaxing she tells him about herself, and how she came to be a whore against her will, but later she begins to suspect him of using her in another manner, to satisfy his prurient lust for information about whores. Little does she know that Eliot has a secret of his own – one that, if revealed to the type of gently-born lady he aspires to, would have her run away shrieking – but can Charity deal with the truth?
This was a lovely story about discovery both sexual and romantic. Charity and Eliot are wonderful, realistic characters whose opinions, desires, and reactions are understandable and sympathetic. Their first love scene was one of the best I'd read in months, and was both hot and very moving. A recommended read.
