Matt and Alexa York arrived in Atlanta two years ago, and decided they'd run far enough. They rented a nice apartment, took up their careers - as lawyer and computer programmer - and hoped no-one would notice that a werewolf and his half-were wife had moved into the neighbourhood.
They're doing okay, until the past comes knocking - and what a past it is: Matt's old pack has issues with his half-breed wife and has set a price upon his head, while Alexa's been keeping a small secret from her husband - she's a bounty hunter.
As if that weren't enough to put a strain on their relationship, the local pack pays them a friendly visit - and decides to offer Matt everything he's been missing for the last four years.
I really, really enjoyed this book. For starters, the central relationship differs from the norm by starting with the couple happily married and in love, then proceeds to show how their relationship develops while they deal with both external threats and the web of problems that has grown around their marriage. I cannot emphasise enough how good it was to find an already established relationship being developed, stretched and strengthened, with the romance zinging from start to finish.
Meanwhile, the plot itself is completely engrossing, all the key characters are likeable and easy to empathise with, and the werewolf/pack behaviours are consistently credible. The tactile backdrop of were-pack life provides a good and pleasantly sensual setting in which the leads' relationship is played, while the strict hierarchies and territorial rules trigger believable tensions and differences.
This is a well-written, expertly spun tale that I am very happy to recommend.
