Kennedy had a far from perfect childhood. Her mother was a drunk, seldom at home and frequently staying out at night. Her step-father was abusive, violent, and a werewolf to boot. One terrible night, her step-father's temper turned on Kennedy, and he attacked and raped her. She fought back, and fled from their home. Running through the forest, terrified and certain she was about to be murdered, she was saved when a dark shadow fell upon her stepfather - and then she blacked out.
Duncan was there that night, as one of the Pride that guards the city and its occupants from werewolves and worse - the Pride that saved Kennedy from her stepfather. Now grown up, he knows that Kennedy is back in town, following the death of her foster parents. He also knows that she's been taking an unusual amount of interest in big cats. But surely, she wasn't aware of what saved her that night - was she?
This is a fabulous short, with a lot of story packed into its well-written pages. Both Kennedy and Duncan are given a good amount of depth and history, while the storyline is well paced and smoothly delivered. I would have liked the ending to have been slightly expanded, and (at the risk of sounding contradictory) I felt the epilogue served little purpose other than to give readers a bonus sex scene - I somehow doubt that anyone's going to join me on that complaint, however ;-) Those minor quibbles aside, this was a great read with likeable characters, and I'll be keeping an eye out for more works by Ms. Walker.
