Liz Carlson is a rare creature: a deep magician, whose magical powers are only equalled by the strict moral code she and other deep magicians are sworn to obey. It's an inherited power, and in their wisdom, her parents set up shop next to the nearest natural source of energy, the Mercer building. Unfortunately, it seems they weren't the only ones aware of this power source. There's a new deep magician in town, masquerading as a business developer trying to buy up the plot - and it looks as though he has none of the moral code Liz is so proud of.
Who can she ask for help? The only person she can think of is the mysterious and wealthy Avran Niccolayic. The townspeople, unaware of the magical forces at play, suggest she ask him for financial and political help. Liz, however, wants to ask for help of another kind - the kind of help a vampire, for example, might be able to supply..
There's a touch of Nancy Drew at play, here, as Liz and Avran hunt through paperwork, basements, and ransacked buildings as they fight against the evil plans afoot.
The central relationship develops as the two struggle against their 'forbidden' relationship. Liz's gradually developing trust in the vampire was very well done, as were his reactions to her mistrust. What didn't quite ring true was her continual denial of the visions sent to her - I thought they were a little too straight forward for her to misinterpret or ignore for so long. Their fears over commitment and abandonment were, however, so well played that they more than made up for this minor frustration :-)
The deep magician concept was interesting, and I was intrigued by the deep-seated fears over 'changing' magicians to vampires. I am hoping these two ideas will be more fully explored in future stories.
Overall, an enjoyable mix of vampires, magic and sleuth-work. Good job, Ms. Violet!
