Copper's in the middle of a lousy sex session with her looser boyfriend when the phone rings. It's Crimson, her twin sister, screaming down the phone for help. Copper doesn't make it to the phone in time. She dials back, but the phones picked up by a man. Panic-ridden, but partly convinced that it might be yet another of her sister's stupid tricks, she leaps onto the next 'plane to St Louis, determined to find out what the hell has been going on.
Once there, she adopts her sister's identity, hoping to find some clues as to what has happened. She doesn't find out much, other than her sister had a boyfriend she hadn't told Copper about. A boyfriend that Copper - to her horror - is attracted to from the moment they meet. A boyfriend that turns out to be a centuries-old vampire, with centuries-old enemies, who in turn have twenties-year old Crimson in their grasp... Thank the gods Copper has something special up her sleeve - even if she doesn't know it yet.
The writing and pacing combined to make this story a one-sitting read. Both Copper and Bastian were strong characters that were easy to empathise with while their relationship developed. In truth, pretty much every character was given depth and motivation, including the baddy Evangeline, which really made some of the scenes crackle with tension.
In particular Crimson, Copper's sister, had a really interesting role alongside the 'baddy', Evangeline, and that can only be praised (and makes me look forward to reading the next in the series).
In summary: a good, solid vampire read. Worth buying.
