Jay has been given an extraordinary gift: the gift of life.
On his return home from a Christmas shopping trip, he finds the body of a woman, slumped in a hallway; badly beaten and surrounded by her own blood. He is drawn to her, unable to resist the magnetic pull of her body, and his terrible gift is unleashed - life, restored to the woman before him.
But the solution is never that simple. The woman was the victim of a serial killer; the only victim to survive her own death, and able to give a description of her attacker - The Watcher. He's still on the loose and he still wants to kill. Will Jay's gift be called upon again?
This is a well-written, mid-length story, with distinct pacing akin to the scene-transitions in shows like Law & Order. The characters have depth, and the plot itself is well executed. Reinke's writing is such that I - a squeamish sort - found myself caught up by every word.
Conceptually, the death-scape idea was interesting and a really good plot device, although I couldn't help but wish the female lead's had something a little different: I found the juxtaposition of some of the sex scenes alongside scenes of violence slightly disturbing.
Fast moving, tightly executed, and with a seamless cross-over between paranormal and suspense, my hunch is this series will be a winner.
