Carrie is preparing a Valentine's dinner for herself and her partner, Jerome. As she cooks, she remembers the many lovers who have taught
her, loved her, and hurt her??. Each memory is revealed with an emotion, a lesson, a feeling: Alan at the ice-rink; her friend of early adolescence, Val; sexy Lebanese lover Lawrence; Peter and his wife-swapping parties; gorgeous married man Nathan; and finally Jerome the railway engineer.
This is a lovely 'stream of consciousness' type story that interweaves
memory and desire, each one triggered by the other or by the action of
cooking or by the smell of the food. It's unusual to see this style,
but it works; however, the overall effect is marred unfortunately by sloppy
editorial work (the POV character is both 'Cassie' and 'Carrie', for
example). This is a unique story - I hope Ms Sawyer uses this style
again; she has much potential.
