A car-crash has robbed Frankie of her hearing. As a musician, this has had a devastating effect on her life – but now her marriage is falling apart. Her husband Tanner is desperate to make things work between them, and suggests that they attend counseling together. But Frankie refuses to talk, too trapped in her unhappiness to move on. Can she break free of her prison, or is this the end of her marriage?
This short story is a tour-de-force. Emotionally and engagingly written, you feel the huge sense of loss that Frankie is experiencing. The opening chapter in the psychiatrist's office was especially good, filled with the detached intensity to detail that a damaged person often notices. You can feel Tanner's anguish as he tries to win back the woman he loves; you can sense his exasperation and finally, his joy. This story was more of an 'experience' rather than 'something to read' – and that's the best compliment I can give.
