I really enjoyed this book, as I have every other Julia Quinn, although I had a feeling that Quinn was fronting the lead characters she really wanted to involve with 'ready-mades'. I'm not saying the lead roles deviate far from "alpha male and naive girl" but enough to make them more. Well: Likeable!
Hyacinth, who to start with we are told has a towering intellect and scathing wit, does not entirely live up to her description but is nevertheless an extremely fun and likeable heroine with lots of, well, I can think of no better word than "gumption".
Meanwhile Gareth is supposedly a devil may care rake until he meets our heroine, but while handsome and charming he may be, he seldom has more "pressing engagements" than visiting his grandmother - oh yes, and falling for the heroine. He has, er... issues, but he's handsome and charming so who cares? (Well, Hyacinth, apparently, bless her socks).
The writing is of course excellent, and the peripheral
characters (particularly Gareth's aforementioned
grandmother) great fun to read, even the obligatory
baddy. There are some real gems, scene-wise, that had
me either laughing or squirming 'in that way' (and
sometimes both) and there is a good buzz between the
leads. I also particularly enjoyed the chapter
introductions, which is a bit of a strange thing to
say, but I thought they set the mood well without
giving the extraneous hints and references so commonly
thrown about in such things.
