At the turn of the century, cities were overcrowded and
Halloween marked the time to let off steam by playing practical jokes
such as turning over out houses. By the 1930's things had gotten out of
hand and serious damage was being done on Halloween. There was a
movement to have children go door to door and ask for candy as an
alternative to vandalism.
For many decades, the United Nations Children's' Fund
(UNICEF) has distributed boxes to children so that they can collect
money at Halloween time. During the 1950's, a few US public schools
banned the UNICEF boxes, over suspicions that it might be a Communist
plot.
Trick-or-Treating: Not wanting to be alone on this
night, the Irish initiated the custom of going from house to house,
gathering food for a community feast. This is believed to be the origin
of our custom of trick-or-treating.
