The Stories in this Quarter's Enchanted Ramblings
Issue are focused on the Jinn family; we thought we would explain a
little about the different types of Jinn.
The Magical communities like humans have their own
societal structure. Where our Society ranks a person based on their
income, the magical community determines their members standing based
on their power level and freedom. The more power you have in their
world, the higher your ranking.
In this Article we will focus on the Jinn family. The
Jinn family is divided into three levels of power. The first level is
the Genies, which are further broken down into two levels. Both are
brought forth through "rubbing the lamp/bottle."
The Genie of the Bottle is bound in servitude for life
to the owner of the Lamp He or she is then passed on from Master to
Master and can never be freed. A good example of this type of Genie is
"Jeannie" from the popular television show I dream of
Jeannie. Although Jeannie wasn't your typical Genie, she actually
enjoyed being her Master's servant. But she is a perfect example of
why you must specify exactly what you want them to do.
The Genie of the Lamp is bound in service to the
holder of the Lamp and must grant said holder three wishes, before
moving on to their next Master. If the holder of the lamp is kind and
generous, this Genie can be freed from servitude to become a mortal.
From Disney's Aladdin to historical documents, we have seen the
limitations of these creatures. They are limited to the realm of the
living and are bound by the higher Jinn family into strict laws,
unknown to most mortals. This binding makes the Genie the lowest in
rank of the Jinn family as they are the least powerful, and are bound
in servitude.
The Gin we are told were created from smokeless fire.
Being consummate tricksters the Gin have the power of invisibility so
as not to be seen while they perform their tricks upon the human
population. They have the ability to take on any physical form known
to man, which allows them the freedom to blend in with humanity. Most
examples of Gin's can be found in Islamic culture. Islamic culture
firmly believes that the Gin were created by the Almighty, but as we
do not have much information on this amazing creature we cannot say
for certain.
As the Gin answer to a higher power than their own and
can be punished for abusing their powers, they are considered a mid
level Jinn.
Then we have the Djinn. They are the Strongest of the
Jinn family. They can be either good or evil in nature and have the
freedom to make their own choices. This freedom of choice makes them
the most powerful of the Jinn family and gives them the power to rule
over the other two classes.
According to legend, they require payment for their
services. Calling upon the Djinn had grave consequences and required a
binding for protection from their wrath. If the binding slipped, the
Djinn could force the mortal into servitude for eternity. The
limitations of the Djinn exist within their own communities. They
create the laws to which they bind others with balance as the ultimate
goal. Assistance to mortals is usually completed at a whim. A promise
by a Djinn, however, has an eternal binding.
So we bring you stories of the Jinn and their
adventures. Enjoy.
